Self-Management of Optical Switching
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a protocol that is widely deployed in most IP networks. It is the main protocol on the transport layer on the Internet. Also, it is a stateful protocol. Optical switching, on the other hand, is a technique that will be employed more and more in the future. This technique provides the moving of ongoing TCP flows from the IP level to established lightpaths on the optical level. Currently a switch is performed manually. However, in the future, autonomic optical switching will be used more often to move ongoing TCP flows on demand. In this report an analysis is provided of what could happen when moving TCP flows on-the-fly. The impact on several TCP congestion control algorithms are examined, namely TCP Reno, Vegas, Compound and Cubic.

High-speed All- Optical Time Division Multiplexed Node
In future high-speed self-routing photonic networks based on all-optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) it is highly desirable to carry out packet switching, clock recovery and demultplexing in the optical domain in order to avoid the bottleneck due to the optoelectronics conversion. In this paper we propose a self-routing OTDM node structure composed of an all-optical router and demultiplex...
متن کاملSelf-management of Hybrid Networks: Introduction, Pros and Cons
In the last decade ‘self-management’ has become a popular research theme within the networking community. While reading papers, one could get the impression that self-management is the obvious solution to solve many of the current network management problems. There are hardly any publications, however, that discuss the drawbacks of selfmanagement. In this paper we will therefore introduce self-...
متن کاملAn Architecture for the Self-management of Lambda-Connections in Hybrid Networks
Hybrid networks are networks capable of switching data at multiple levels (optical and IP packet level) by means of multi-service optical switches. As a result of that, huge flows at the IP-level may be moved to the optical-level, which is faster than the packet-level. Such move could be beneficial since congested IP networks could be off-loaded, leaving more resources for other IP flows. At th...
متن کاملOptimization of Bistability in Nonlinear Chalcogenide Fiber Bragg Grating for All Optical Switch and Memory Applications
We solve the coupled mode equations governing the chalcogenide nonlinear fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) numerically, and obtain the bistability characteristics. The characteristics of the chalcogenide nonlinear FBGs such as: switching threshold intensity, bistability interval and on-off switching ratio are studied. The effects of FBG length and its third order nonlinear refractive index on FBG cha...
متن کاملA Survey of Burst Assembly Algorithms for Optical Burst Switching (OBS)
A lot of research has focused on the need to develop an all-optical next generation network. That is, the development of a network where both transmission and switching are all performed in the optical domain. Optical Burst Switching (OBS) has so far received more attention than its predecessors for such a solution. Burst assembly is one the most crucial elements of OBS. The objective of this p...
